Ostium secundum is an asd in the upper portion of the atrial septum because the tissue underestimated how much there needs tobe to cover the hole of the foramen ovale. This problem can be due to an enlarged foramen ovale (so that it is not completely covered by the septum primum), inadequate growth of the septum secundum (so there's a part of the hole that's not covered) or excessive absorption of the septum primum. ASDs are classified by their different location and development: Secundum ASD occurs in the middle part of the atrial septum. Primum ASD occurs in the lower part of the atrial septum close to the tricuspid and mitral valves. Sinus venosis occurs in the upper part of the atrial septum near the veins that drain into the right and left atrium. There are 3 major types of ASDs or interatrial communications: ostium secundum, ostium primum, and sinus venosus ( Figure 1 A) defects. The ostium secundum is a true defect of the atrial septum and involves the region of the fossa ovalis.

ASD Vs PFO : ASD is a defect ( hole) in the atrial septum and usually requires closure.
10-20% of adults have some sort of inter-atrial communication. Physiology Holes between the atria are usually remnants of the foramen ovale, in which the flap valve does not fit across the foramen well. ASD may be subtyped as ostium secundum or partial atrioventricular sep-tal defect (ostium primum). Ostium secundum defect . This defect is in the region of the foramen ovale. The atrioventricular (AV) valves are normal. The defect is usually isolated, found incidentally, and 3 times more common in girls.

There are three main types of ASD: ostium secundum, ostium primum and and sinus venous. There are few reports of multi-hole ostium secundum ASD, its incidence is estimated in 4-10%. Secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), located in the central part of the atrial septum within the floor of the fossa ovalis, is the most common type of ASD. It is a shunt between the systemic and pulmonary circulations. Patients with an isolated ASD often remain asymptomatic early in life. An ostium secundum atrial septal defect is a type of congenital heart defect called an atrial septal defect (ASD). An ASD is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers of the heart (the atria).
